We have recently moved and this washing machine is an older model with no fabric softener dispenser. I've tried setting a timer and listening to the rinse, but more than 50% of the time I've skipped a rinse and had to either run a second rinse and drain or use the dryer. It's like a Ronco skewer for clothing care - set and forget. The fluffy ball works great! I've actually stopped the washing machine and made sure it releases fabric softener when it should - in case you're wondering, it really is.
