I live in San Francisco and lock up my bike in Inner Richmond, Marina, North Beach, Mission, Mission Bay and SOMA. For those not living in San Francisco, these areas range from safe to moderately unsafe. I pass homeless people who have bikes without front wheels stacked in a 15-bike high pile right next to where I work. My bike is still mine, so. For the record, I use it in combination with NY Kryptonite, a TiGr lock and with ball bearings in all my bolts. I have no idea which of these items has the most deterrent effect, or if any of them helped at all. When I first installed them I think I had trouble tightening them enough because I had burned the mount down. and started smelling like melted rubber. It turned out to be loose and the wheel wobbled enough that my disc brake pads broke completely. Once I put the skewer back on it didn't come loose, but I'm still careful with it.
