When I received the jacket I thought the same thing. Why are the pockets showing on the back of the jacket? This design is DEFINITELY NOT suitable for keeping your hands warm as it is uncomfortable to put your hands in. and then I remembered that this is a BIKE jacket, and the only point of these pockets is VENTILATION! Pop open your pockets and you've got the perfect "bucket" design for getting cooler air into your clothes. Unzip the center neck zip for perfect airflow and non-stop cooling, remove your jacket, stash it somewhere and continue your journey. This is really a GREAT DESIGN for a cycling jacket! This would be a terrible design for anything but a cycling jacket.
