Review on πŸ“Ί Revolutionize Your TV Experience with the Universal Remote Control MX-850 IR/RF Aeros Remote Control by Zaine Davis

Revainrating 4 out of 5

good home theater solution despite some quirks in setup

I have just replaced our much abused family MX-700 with the new MX-850 and despite the initial difficulties it has worked great. For the benefit of other buyers here is my experience. First, it is software that is not included in the package. You need to visit universalremote.com and download it. To do this, you need to register your name etc. and the serial number of your MX-850. Pretend you're a "pro" and not a "consumer," go to the professional support page and find your remote. There is also the option to register and download. The chip is in the serial number which is on two stickers under the batteries but obviously doesn't work when glued into the mould. I found a tip on a support forum that worked for me: select "K" from the drop down list and enter the number of the second sticker in both fields. I'm not sure how much of that voodoo matters, but entering both numbers from the stickers didn't work exactly. That's odd and shows an odd inconsistency in this company's support for a mostly good product. At least they should explain it on their download page. Next is the serial data cable, which comes with the remote control, although it's not on this Revain listing. I have an old XP PC with a serial port on the front that I used to program my MX-700 with a few years ago, but it no longer communicates with the remote, probably because the PC is somehow misconfigured. So I gave up that PC and tried an even older ThinkPad T20 with Windows 2000. It worked great and I was able to boot my old MX-700 setup on the new MX-850. I really like how they have maintained compatibility even though the design and UI are dated. After a refresher with their weird tutorial I was able to switch the TV model to our new Sharp Aquos and fix the macros for that set. The software seems quite modern and its model is close enough to our new one that the IR codes work. I didn't have to research any obscure IR codes as the codes provided work for even complex things like power up and input selection. So I recommend buying the MX-850 if you need a home theater remote with macros. have access to a PC with a serial port and a clean install of Windows, and are familiar with the rudimentary programming concepts you would use in a spreadsheet program. Please note that obtaining the required programming software is a gray area and I cannot promise URC will not slam the door on us consumers. For comparison, we originally had a Philips Pronto which worked, but I hated the touch. screen and he eventually died from a broken screen after being abused by our children. They weren't nice to the MX-700 either, but it still worked after I found all the parts and put them back together. Like almost every remote ever made, it was wrapped in duct tape to keep the battery door in place. I would give this product a five star rating if they changed the programming cable to USB, cleaned up the registration process, made the battery door out of titanium, and tweaked the design a bit. And there's no harm in letting you program with a Mac, but let's not get carried away.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Incredible piggy bank
