Type of review

I think the functionality of this remote is well described in other reviews. I would add that we have 8 of these in different rooms, some going straight to the TV, in some cases to the receiver and in some cases through Audio Authority's matrix router. He handles all occasions well. I was lucky that the installer gave me a copy of the software and apparently was able to get the IR updates. But if you are NOT a professional installer I have no idea how you would use it. You really need software…

MX-850 Eros Remote Control

I first bought this remote from a home theater installer in San Diego about 6 years ago. I had to replace it because the RF wasn't working (the internal antenna was internally weakened) from years of my kids throwing it around. Luckily the IR still worked and I had time to buy a new one from the North Coast Home Theater (NCHT). The first remote I ordered from NCHT was damaged upon arrival. It's not NCHT's fault and when I emailed them about the situation, they sent me another remote control…

Pros
  • Expensive but decent
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

This is a very powerful remote control, but it takes time to learn the programming method (software) and to enter all the information in it. I wouldn't recommend it for most users unless you've trained the installer to do the initial setup for you or you don't like that sort of thing. However, this is a great remote control. My wife was able to use it almost immediately without any special training. My 7 year old uses it quite well too. What's especially nice is that once you've programmed it…

good home theater solution despite some quirks in setup

I have just replaced our much abused family MX-700 with the new MX-850 and despite the initial difficulties it has worked great. For the benefit of other buyers here is my experience. First, it is software that is not included in the package. You need to visit universalremote.com and download it. To do this, you need to register your name etc. and the serial number of your MX-850. Pretend you're a "pro" and not a "consumer," go to the professional support page and find your remote. There is…

Required software not included or not available

Let's say a car company sells you a car but won't let you drive it. They gave the keys to the chauffeur you paid for every time you needed to go somewhere. That's essentially what Universal Remote Control Inc decided to do with the MX-850 and many of the other products they sell. You can buy the remote control yourself, but no matter how experienced you are with programming, your dealer will have to program the remote control for you (at an additional cost, of course). Every time you add or…

Great remote control; Bad support

I'm a little unsure how to rate this. The remote works almost flawlessly, especially compared to the Harmony remotes I've had before. On the downside, since the manufacturer obviously favors professional installers, there are a number of artificial obstacles that make it difficult to get started, although programming the remote is a fairly elementary exercise once you finally get started. Based on my previous experience with two Harmony remotes, the majority of this review is mainly comparing…
