Review on LADER Whetstone Sharpener Honing and Flattening Tool by Greg Greiner

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good value but might just need a few tweaks

This is a great value for the whole package and is great for sharpening everything from axes to scalpel blades and planes. The corner guide is a nice addition but could use a bit more precision in handling. I can change the angle when sharpening something like a construction razor, but there's nothing in the angle manual that guarantees the angle will be maintained throughout the sharpening process. Also the sharpening stone is not as good as other sharpening sets. Works fast but isn't as complex as full-size fonts with a chevron cut into the surface. This means it won't last as long and isn't big enough to cover the entire whetstone at once. This makes it difficult to get a perfectly flat whetstone. But stones, leather straps, compound, and a flat leatherworking tool are effective for mending blades, polishing them with a little jeweler's blush, and turning almost any blade into a surgically sharp edge. Obviously this depends on the width of the main bevel and the length of the cutting bevel, so you can't expect an ax head to be as sharp as the tools the surgeon uses. This requires some metalworking skill to change the angle of the main land and give yourself more room for the length and therefore width of the cutting land. The green compound on the skin is very helpful in this last step of sharpening tools. But it would be nice to have a piece of jeweler's rouge as well, as it's good for finishing and polishing blades without removing the metal in the process. Personally, I use jeweler's pomade with my other leather strap to keep a straight razor in tip-top condition without causing blade wear. Right now I have a relatively cheap straight razor for experimenting and developing muscle memory. I also have a pre-Civil War Birmingham steel family razor. It is a beautiful and timeless job that many of my predecessors held as officers in the Union Army and US Navy when it was customary for officers to have a Batman whose job it was to shave the assigned officer clean. regularly. Of course I don't want to damage the double sanded and acid etched fairing. Therefore, a polish that will clean but not remove metal and potentially damage acid-etched decorations is an absolute must. This kit would be invaluable for regular Batman duties. The only thing that bothers me is the poor corner guidance, the too small finishing stone and the lack of a more metal-friendly putty. And this pack still deserves attention for both the quality of the whetstones and the price of the whole pack.
