Review on πŸ”© Durable and Versatile Complete Doweling Dowel Pins Version - Perfect for Precise Joinery by Ryan Springer

Good idea but lacks precision/rigidity

The device works in principle but due to the inherent flexibility of plastic it's impossible to be exact. With edge-to-face joints, there will be too much slope when you put it all together: First, bend the plastic dowel pins while drilling the first hole in the edge, causing the dowels to sit a little loose. Second, use this slightly loose anchor to install the plastic guardrail. Third, the plastic guard flexes slightly when drilling the front. Biggest problem #2 as the glue can seep into the slightly wobbly holes. By pushing the main body either all the way forward or all the way back with the fence touching the side of the workpiece, I was able to deflect the edge 1/32 inch in either direction. That means it's technically possible to get it in the middle, but it's more about finesse than precision, reducing the goal of buying a light by 90%. about 1/64th of an inch in one direction and I'm sure I could sharpen one of the guides to make it perfect if I cared enough. I think there's a reason the DowelMax is $300.
