Degrades sound quality

Before purchasing I read the negative reviews and should have listened to them, but to my shame I found that the original reviewers were too picky or worked in an industry in who represented something like that would be a big problem. A number of reviews found that these cushions negatively affect the sound quality of the ATH-M series headphones. I needed replacement cushions for my M40X headphones and was debating whether to buy OEM replacements or save a few bucks. I lowered the price and went with them, also assuming that over time they might not peel and flake everywhere. I installed them and played a familiar track to see how they sounded. Something wasn't right, the bass sounded a bit dull and the highs weren't that crisp. Now, due to the original earcups peeling off, I was listening to a pair of Sennheiser open-back headphones that sound completely different than these and thought maybe I'd just forgotten what they sound like. I still had worn out pads so I reinstalled them and played the track again. Very clear difference in sound. I've swapped them out several times to confirm my comparison and yes the sound is very different and definitely not the same as they were in a bad way. That might not be a problem for some and they seem well made and probably more durable than the originals given the material used, but the change in sound won't be a start if you like how your headphones sound. This actually inspired me to do a full comparison review of a range of different interchangeable ear pads as these seem to be a common replacement for these earbuds. By the way, the headband pad has also started to degrade as it is made of the same material as the pads. and I installed a neoprene sleeve from a company called Chinese Alphabet Soup and it seems to be working fine.
