These levers work well with mechanical disc brakes. I plan to upgrade to hydraulic discs over time but can't justify an upgrade just yet. I needed new shifters and my old ones were integrated with the brake levers leaving only a few shifter options, most of which didn't work for me. These levers did away with fully integrated levers, but I was able to keep my mechanical disc brakes for now. The levers are high quality and offer a good feel with or without gloves. I can easily brake with one finger. The barrel adjusters work a lot better than the old low Shimano's I had before. If you are looking for a brake lever for mechanical disc brakes, we recommend this one. I would have guessed they would work just as well on rim brakes, but I didn't use them for that purpose.
