New vs Old: Tritan vs Intak

This review is for a Thermos Tritan bottle, mostly compared to a Thermos Intak bottle. I use a water bottle almost all day, every day. . I take the same to work and then bring it home to use. I prefer drinking from a water bottle to a glass to avoid spilling water and simply because I like how it's drunk from the right bottle. Cleanliness, ergonomics and longevity are the most important things for me in a bottle. I've tried several different bottles over the years and Thermos Intak is my favorite. I have several Intaks and wash them in the top rack of the dishwasher every few days. The disadvantage of the Intak bottle is that the cap will break if dropped hard enough on a hard surface. It's not the end of the world as you can get a replacement top from the manufacturer for $4 each just by calling. The ergonomics of the Intak bottle are fantastic. The opening is just right for drinking, the lid closes to keep the spout clean and also disassembles for thorough cleaning. I decided to try this new Tritan bottle because it is very similar to the Intak bottle that I love, with some improvements. It's the same size in volume and slightly shorter, maybe 1/4 inch, due to the more compact lid. Judging by the photos I thought the thermos improved the strength/brittleness of the cap which was my main complaint about Intak and the main reason I tried Tritan. The Cap upgrade brings many improvements: a) More compact design which could be more durable. I didn't try to drop the bottle on purpose, but it seems like it holds up a little better, although I can't say for sure. It's nowhere near indestructible, but nothing is perfect. b) Improved breech and spring mechanism compared to Intak. Now he uses silicone rubber to open the cap, while Intak uses a small piece of silicone rubber to open the cap. This change offers smoother closing and opening, as well as better feel to the mechanism. It also helps ensure the top opens fully. I can see this silicone band wearing out after a while, but it's easy and cheap to replace, as is the gasket. c) The additional metal safety cap is retained and is a little easier to attach than the Intakd) The lanyard (usually for holding the bottle with one finger) has also been improved and its position no longer interferes with opening the cap when the trigger button is pressed . On older Intaks, if you flip the hook down and try to open the lid with one hand, it doesn't open fully (I've only noticed this happens on some of my Intaks). I never use this feature, but I've found the ring on the new bottle to work well, although it spins a bit harder than the Intak. In addition to the cap improvements, the Tritan bottle is MUCH easier to grip. This is very welcome as the Intak bottle can get a bit slippery when wet. While the redesign brings all these improvements, it comes at the expense of ergonomics: the spout is significantly smaller in diameter. It's also not skewed like the Intak spout. I've found that if I take more than one sip, the Tritan spout doesn't let enough water through and air mixes with the water. It's not bad, but drinking from it isn't as convenient as from Intak. This bad trait of the Tritan is really annoying because it's better than the Intak in almost every other way. I've just ordered 4 more bottles of Intak just in case. Thermos decides to stop production. I won't order any more Tritan bottles, but I won't do without Tritan entirely either. I hope this review helps others choose their water bottle. Of course, a water bottle is important to me and I probably sound like a big nerd. Maybe I am What can I say? PS: There are NO interchangeable parts between Intak and Tritan bottles. Edit: Since too many Intak caps break, I'm now using 32oz Nalgene narrow-mouth bottles. They are very break-resistant, have a higher resilience and are not that heavy. Aside from these benefits, I still like the Intak bottle for the benefits listed in my review.
