I don't usually write product reviews; but this time I have to write this (1) to help others who have a similar problem; and (2) this product deserves a good rating. I have a 20 year old house and one of the sprinkler control valves was broken (water keeps leaking from the sprinkler heads). This product is the cheapest on the market ($44), the closest I found was $300. Professional costs $600. A local store offered a $60 rental. I was skeptical as were others in these reviews but as this was the cheapest solution it's worth a try. I received the goods a day after ordering. I agree with other reviewers that the plastic case looks cheap. I was surprised how well it works. Within an hour I found all the boxes of sprinkler valve caps. Some of them were less than 6 inches in the mud. It took me a good 15 minutes to "get the sound". Once you "caught" it, it was easy to follow the wire to the valve cover box. Here are some pointers that may help others: (1) Find a long screwdriver or metal rod and stick it in the ground; (2) tie an electrical wire (remove the plastic shield) to a screwdriver, ensure good metal contact; (3) Connect the black clip (from the transmitter) to this ground wire; (4) remove valve control wire from sprinkler control station; (5) Connect the red clip (from the transmitter) to the sprinkler valve wire you wish to route; (6) The transmitter switch has 3 positions, first move the switch down to "Check Battery", both the power LED and status LED must be on; (7) Now move the switch up to scan the cable and turn the thumbscrew (on top of the transmitter) to the maximum to maximize the transmitted signal. (8) Turn on the receiver unit when you are within a few feet of the microphone transmitter (NOTE: DO NOT use headphones at this time). You should hear a high-pitched tone. Adjust the knob on the receiver to a comfortable level without causing pain in your ear; (9) As you circle the transmitter with the sensor very close to the ground, listen for the tone change, the tone changes from loud to . Soft . Not alone . Soft . loudly, when you hear this change, find the starting point of the wire; (10) Place the marker on the last spot found and try to enter it in the courtyard. If necessary, adjust the dial to increase the volume. (11) At a certain point if you are too far from the transmitter the signal will be attenuated (about 50ft in my case) then put on headphones to hear the change in tone better. (12) As you get closer to the end of the cable, you lose the tone change. (13) Mark out this area (about 2 feet in diameter) and use a sharp tool such as a pencil. B. a long metal rod to probe the ground. (14) If you hear the noise when probing the ground when the valve cover box is under a thick layer of dirt, you may not be able to feel it, but you may hear an "empty" noise. This is how I found all the sprinkler valve covers, good luck!
