Extremely difficult to get update: buggy: no tech support

Everything you need to connect your GODIAG GD201 OBD2 scanner to PC and vehicles came with a great zipped hard case (with handle) , Quick Start Guide and User Guide. Immediately after unpacking, you need to run the update on the scanner. The user manual says that the free updates have ended. When the free updates end, your tool will still work, but you will no longer be able to access updated servers without purchasing an update pack. When it comes to accessing and installing scanner updates, the detailed user manual points you to a quick start guide. ** Don't lose your quick start guide thinking the details will be in there. You are not. ** Running the update was a nightmare for me. My first two laptops are locked down like Fort Knox for security reasons, and no matter what I tried, or turned off security and firewalls, it didn't work on my computer. Finally a third computer to run updates on, but not without too much hassle. First, if you have any luck, you should find out where the update file is on the GODIAG website if updatetool.exe doesn't run automatically as it should. Of course not mine. So here we go with the tech rodeo... Quick setup - the connection to the machine with the updatetool.exe file didn't appear so I had to go to the webpage. The quick start guide says to click Support or Downloads, unzip the files and download the program to install the update. Unfortunately, you click on "Support" and you only see "How to register and update..." along with technical support and some other support topics. Take the chance and click on "How do I update". You'll get more instructions on how to do this, but there's still no link to actually do the update. When creating your account password, remember that you CANNOT use special characters. what to use when creating a password. You just get a big orange bar in the password fields until they match and you meet their specs. It took me a minute through trial and error to figure out that special characters weren't allowed. How I finally got updates for the scanner:* Connect the scanner to your computer using the USB port that came with it.* Go to www.godiag.com. * Create an account and register your device. (Mine automatically imported the device data for registration since it was already connected to the computer.)* From the home screen, click SUPPORT and then click TECHNICAL SUPPORT.* On the next page that opens: (2 from top to at the bottom of the list at the time of writing this ) Click on Godiag GD 201 202 203 Updater Tool. * Click the NEW button on the right and then click UPDATER TOOL DOWNLOAD. * Open the download file and run the file. *Windows protected my computer so I had to click MORE INFO and then RUN. Click YES and then* click INSTALL.* Now go to your PC program files and locate the GODIAG program you just installed.* Click on the updated file and you will be taken to another login page. * Click on REGISTER.* You may need to register in the system. again after registration. I already signed up because I had previously tried these updates on another laptop which caused me so much heartache that it couldn't be completed. (This issue is what prompted me to create this list for you.)* I clicked "keep me signed in" so I wouldn't have to fiddle with it again (but I still have to sign in every time).* after a few minutes will the update file will appear on the screen.* Click the green download arrows next to each file (or select "Update All" at the bottom of the screen) and the download will begin. Give it a try... it takes a long time.* You will see a progress bar next to each file. When they are complete they will show 100% and the bar on the bottom left of the screen will say UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY. There is a new list of multiple vehicle files to update. I clicked "UPDATE ALL" again. I restarted my computer, went back to the GODIAG-PC program file and logged in again. *Note: Updates were never displayed on the scanner screen. The screen just says udisk (to indicate it's connected to your computer) * This automatically led me back to another long list of required updates (with different car makes/models). I decided to update everything again. This happened three times and ended up taking two days to update. But it finally worked, and now I'm off to test the scanner! The scanner itself worked fine with a few hiccups after the update fiasco. It was a little temperamental to recognize my car. Several times he said that my car is not supported. But I would choose another function and go back to the one that was having problems and it would recognize my car and work fine. He read the codes and told me something was wrong with my truck, which I didn't even suspect. I definitely see value in having a scanner, but I'll probably look for another user-friendly one. The GODIAG scanner also doesn't cover all my vehicles, which is disappointing. I have a jeep with some issues that I was hoping to get codes from, but the jeep is not on the supported vehicles list. I didn't discover this until I found a list of supported vehicles when I checked their website for the update required for this scanner. It includes Chevy, GM, Ford, a few other high-end cars, a few luxury cars, and a long list of cars I've never heard of. As I become more familiar with the various functions, I believe this scanner can be a valuable tool in keeping my non-Jeep vehicles running. Assuming the glitches are fixed in future updates. If you have the patience to go through the upgrade process, the scanner is a valuable tool. If you want it to work with a specific vehicle you own, check their listing for that scanner (on their website) before purchasing. I made a video so you can see some of the features. I've trimmed the video a bit so it jumps between screens quite quickly in places, but you'll enjoy many features. I displayed my vehicle information but did not include it in the video for VIN and privacy/security reasons. It was also one of the buggy features I mentioned earlier. In general, in my opinion, a little buggy. I am giving three stars due to the extreme difficulty in getting updates and occasional scanner crashes. When I asked for help, tech support wasn't up to scratch either, which kept me hanging for over two weeks. I had to stretch my hand through multiple avenues to even get an answer. When I consented to the requested shady PC support and asked for a date and time for consent, I received an "OK" and received no further response. Considering the price support should be willing to help, it would have been a lot easier to use the scanner and fewer crashes once I finally got it working. I'm sorry this review has become so long. If you're still stuck with this, hopefully the upgrade steps I've listed will help you avoid the problems I'm having.
