Review on ๐Ÿ’ฆ Stay Hydrated and Perform Better: CamelBak Ultra Pro Running Hydration Vest, 34oz by Yuan Walsh

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I'm not a fan of bottles or pipes. The vest is comfortable.

I have been using the Nathan Hydro Vest for many years on 6-30 mile runs. When I'm not running long distances I use a Camelback 0.75L bottle and when cycling I use either a large or small Camelback bag. So I was ready to try the Camelback Hydration Vest. First, I misread the ad. I thought I would get a camelback with a reservoir and a hose. Not correct! This vest comes with two collapsible 0.5L bottles and no reservoir. I haven't tried installing the tank and hose, but it's possible. Took a test ride this morning, 8.2 miles including 1 mile mountain trail. Here's what I found out.1. Is there a whistle The cord of the tiny whistle is so short that I had to try three times to get it to my lips. A short string kept pulling it out of its mouth. It cannot be used while running as you are looking at your shoes. The tone is so low and high that I had to ask another runner if it was an SOS whistle or a dog whistle. I'm still not sure. big and weak. I have a whistle in Nathan that can be heard.2. I took 2 full bottles, 2 energy gels, a handkerchief, an old (smaller) iPhone, a light raincoat and later tucked in my running gloves. The whole device was handy, except for the bottles (below).3. I would have to completely remove the backpack to put my gloves in the main compartment. It's embarrassing. I ask someone to deliver them to me. Awkward.4. Those bottles. First, a full bottle actually turned up during the first mile. Luckily I caught him before he hit the ground. Apparently you need to make sure the neck of the bottle is inside (under) the tie cord. This is impractical with a full bottle (easier when the bottle is empty). I had to find this out as the vest just didn't feel right with full bottles bouncing up and down. However, when the bottles were really tightened, they felt more comfortable. Second, during the run, it was easier to stop for a minute, drink, and put it back in your pocket than it was to drink while running. And the reason wasn't in the design of the bottle, but in that little tip with a quick-release cap. It is small and particularly difficult to handle with gloves. Without gloves, you still use both hands (when running) to find the line and release the bottle. You then have to insert the bottle deep enough so that it doesn't slip out. This is also an issue when you take your pack off on the trail. If the bottles are not tightened, they may slide straight to the ground. Although these bottles were 0.5L each, I felt there was less water. I didn't fill them to the brim and the last bite was difficult to squeeze out. With my Camelback hand bottle you get every drop. This is important when going unsupported on long runs. I need all this water! I will continue to try to understand the terms that are appropriate for this product. I like that it has more room for things than my Nathan.
