I have been using filters under gravel for at least 34 years. They work well for goldfish. Now I combine the primer with two filters hanging on the side. I love my fish and want them to be in the best condition. The goldfish is a priceless treasure. The saddest thing in the world is when your favorite friend, a 12-year-old goldfish, gets sick. I will always use bottom filters in my aquariums. I have wonderful stories about mean goldfish. My first goldfish learned to rub its mouth against glass while making squeaking noises. We were already in love and that was the beginning of a deeper friendship. My goldfish had a companion who became ill and died after many happy years together. She raised and lowered this goldfish to let it breathe for 24 hours. We take turns because she doesn't rest. The fish survived and lived for another year. One year later. I highly recommend and use this product. I'm recovering from traumatic brain injury and my favorite fish inspires me.
