I used to sharpen my knives with the WorkSharp belt system and it gave good results. I have never used a leather sharpening belt but wanted to try it and see if it offered an extra level of sharpening compared to WorkSharp. I mainly sharpen EDC folding knives (Kershaw, Benchmade, Civivi, CRKT and others) and don't really delve into kitchen details etc. Firstly, this simple Hutsul sling is easy to use even for a beginner. I polished the smooth side with the included green stick and got to work. Maintaining the right angle becomes easier after a few hits, and I generally did about 20 hits on each side of the blade. You quickly get into a rhythm and then check the results. My first knife was CRKT Pilar, and the Hutsuls remade the blade! Tried an old paper test and it cut it to shreds in seconds. I wasn't sure if I would feel a difference or not, but after editing there is a difference. You have to be very careful not to cut yourself when you're done. A note: cheaper and softer steels are easier and quicker to get a razor sharp edge than D2 or some super hard steels which take longer. in most cases more than 20 steps. I think it makes sense. I only bought the leather strap without a wooden block or wooden carrying handle. I'm glad I did because leaving room on the ends without buffing helps hold the leather in place while smoothing. And the whole set fits perfectly in my canvas shoulder bag that I take with me when I go camping. Best use of ten bucks sharpening my knives I've ever made!
