Sanding sponges are a great tool when done right; it's not like this. I took the 80 grit sponge from that pack and lathed a section of the part I had just sanded with an 80 grit Abranet leaving huge scratches and gouges - I had to go back to the kerf to remove them . Examination of the sponge showed that it had a wide range of abrasive particle sizes, some of which were too large for the 80 grit. Some of the cracks between the grit were also too large. The basic rule of thumb is to only increase 50% at a time: 80 -> 120, 120 -> 180, etc. You jump from 120 to 220. Leave the coarser sponges to scrape paint and rust off the metal and don't do that . Don't use them on your beautiful woodworking projects.
