No, they're not perfect and will ignite near bright light, but for quick welding they're great to wear in an emergency. Mine automatically dimmed immediately and I could see the puddle as I welded. I would say shade #9 or #10 in the dark. Of course, they won't protect your face from arc flash when you're wearing them, so by no means ONLY wear them unless you have a lot of hair and won't be sweating for more than 10 seconds. Otherwise you risk severe burns. I suppose they can also be used to view welds from a safe distance, but I would try to keep your distance (at least 25 feet) with them as well unless you are otherwise protected. .
