Update - The control panel on the block broke down just before the return window. The remote control is still working, so the device is still cooling down. I hope the remote doesn't fail either. Changing my rating from 5 to 2 stars as the device is still working. But failure of the control panel in the first 40 days of use can be a bad omen. Amana is on my list not to buy. I live in southern Tennessee where the problem in summer is the high humidity. I bought this air conditioner to remove the moisture that my large central air conditioner is missing. The humidity in my house is above 60% for most of the summer when the central air conditioning is on. The central air conditioning is turned off until the moisture is removed. I turned this unit on when the indoor humidity was 60%. Within 6 hours the humidity dropped to 48%. There is a "dry" mode that works well. I run it continuously and it always keeps the humidity below 55%. The bonus is that my main unit hardly ever turns on, which extends its lifespan. I keep the doors to 3 bedrooms closed during the day as there is nobody there then. The energy guide says this air conditioner costs $90 per season (three months of 8-hour operation at 12 cents per kWh). Similar brands cost between $66 and $115. The downside is that the device is quite noisy. Not important enough to me as it's at the other end of the 'great room', away from the living room. You can adjust the fan speed, but I just leave it in "Eco" mode when the AC adjusts the fan speed. I had a central air conditioner from Amana in southern OK where temperatures regularly exceed 100C in the summer. It was still going strong after 19 years of heavy use when I sold the house. Highly recommended.
