Review on πŸ’Ύ Samsung T3 Portable SSD 500GB USB 3.1 External Solid State Drive (MU-PT500B/AM) by Eduardo Davis

Fast enough for editing 1080p video

The Samsung T3 500GB USB 3.0 SSD is a small device (smaller than a deck of cards) with high speed. The body of the device is a combination of black plastic and gray bronze metal. It features a mini USB-C connector and an included standard USB 3.0 cable that works with USB 3.0/USB 2.0 devices such as laptops or desktops. I edit video on my 13-inch year-old Macbook Pro using Final Cut X (yes, the screen size is a little tight), and the drive is fast enough to edit 1080p/30fps 4:2:2 video to get the speed to match the BlackMagic drive design. Test. I tested it by loading the project and it processed it with no dropped frames. I haven't tried 1080p/60 4:4:2, but the speed results say it should be able to handle 430.6 MB/s read times and 403.4 MB/s write times. I formatted the drive as a Mac HFS Journal drive - I've read that HFS formatting slows down speeds, but since I'll only be using this on a Mac I found this to be the most useful as I can use it the Mac's drive recovery tools, if necessary. This drive solves a big problem for my limited storage space on my Macbook when using it with software that benefits from fast read/write operations. I've wanted something like this for a while and this is all I expected.

Pros
  • Not cheap, but decent
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
