It moves the door about 4.125 inches when installed on the baseboard, which is more than I wanted, but there is no choice in the length of the magnetic door latches. They last a lifetime. Outdoors or in high humidity, they will likely rust to pieces in a few years. #1 Dismantle the long part of the post. It has been properly tightened and put some thread lock on to hold it in place. (I used my own flat head screws to place it better.) Note that since it's not perpendicular, you'll need to orient it for what looks and works best. It is important. #4 Put the cap on the screw, then the long body, then lock the threads and tighten the chrome ball. #5 Unscrew the base of the socket from its back - the entire back plate will unscrew. Take out the feather and set it aside until almost done. For a trial assembly, screw the cup onto the base plate. #6 Place the mug EXACTLY on the chrome ball and open the door until it touches the mug. I greased the bottom plate of the cup so that a clearly visible stain remains on the door. #7 Drive a screw into one side of the base and into the door. Tighten relatively firmly. #8 Open the door again to make sure it lines up correctly. Hold it and close the door just enough to drill and screw a second screw into the door. #9 Unscrew the outer base making sure the base is clean and fits snugly against the door. I attached a threaded lock to the outside of the baseplate, then put the spring back in place and threaded the receiver cup around everything. #10 I admire your work. I have no idea what to do. If you match the cup and the ball perfectly, it will hold very tight. If you deviate a little then it stops weak. It was supposed to take 3 minutes but took 10 minutes due to the lack of instructions (now that I've written them I can install quicker next time). It was designed to be cheap, to look good, and it succeeded. But the quality of the metal is very poor and it doesn't assemble without a few extra things (a washer, decent screws and instructions).
