A great way to prepare the pages of a sketchbook

This white gesso is a cheap and easy way to prepare paper for painting. It should work for all types of inks and on any suitable paper. I recommend it to anyone who wants to draw in a sketchbook. because that's what I use it for. I mainly use plaster in sketchbooks for one of two purposes: first, applying a coat or two of white plaster leaves the bottom drawing mostly visible but not too noticeable, and offers good water resistance. surface for painting. Secondly, unnecessary drawings are painted over with three or four layers of gesso to almost completely mask them and reuse the page. A few more things to note: watercolor and gouache stay active longer on a plaster surface (and watercolor floats more easily with hard edges). This can be beneficial in warmer conditions, but it may also require you to be more water-efficient than you might otherwise be used to. Gesso leaves a rather rough and jagged surface, almost like sandpaper, and can show streaky strokes. I've found this to be especially important when using hard materials (like watercolor pencils) over gesso, as you'll see more texture than even curled paper. Next time I'll try applying with a paint roller for a more even finish. And I read that you can grind gesso down to a flatter texture.

Pros
  • For preparing surfaces for painting with acrylics and oils
Cons
  • Small parts
