The regulator was leaking from the inside and pressurized the tank in the hose. Creepy yes. So this was my first time disassembling a regulator, I was worried the springs would go to waste but there was no tension left during disassembly. Be careful with your original small needle pusher, it must be reused. I had fairly severe pitting on the diaphragm seating surfaces of the main body castings, which thankfully cleaned up well enough to be resealed when replaced. Worse, this is not the place for Permatex! The replacement looked and felt the same as the factory originals, good thing!
