Frustrating thermals and incomplete instruction manual

I bought this cooler for my old Core i7-4790k as I was moving it to a small form factor case (Fractal Design Node 202) for gaming in the living room have room. . I knew it wouldn't be as efficient as the AIO water cooler I had before, but in a small form factor world, size matters more than performance. However, I found myself disappointed.1. My i7-4790k was thermally throttled under load (Aida64) meaning it hit 100*C even on default settings. I figured my GPU might be letting too much hot air into the case, so I got a fan-style GPU (good reason to upgrade I think!). Temperatures were still high after that, so I disabled hyper-threading and lowered the CPU voltage to keep temperatures down. 2. Upon unpacking the cooler, I noticed that it comes with a plastic back plate, 4 hex nuts, a hex screwdriver and 4 plastic washers. The installation instructions didn't say anything about washers, so I didn't know what to do with them. I just followed the instructions given and found that once the cooler was unscrewed, the backplane flexed noticeably due to being pressed against the metal plate on the back of my motherboard. I wanted to add washers to fix this but the mounting bolts weren't long enough so I just left the washers and got on with my life. Fast forward a few weeks and I accidentally found out while researching AMD processors that these washers were meant to be used INSTEAD of a backplate on some motherboards with an LGA socket and now I can't find them anywhere. I might add detailed instructions, Cryorig! I could have solved the temperature issues myself, but now that I know the CPU backplate is going to be overloaded, I've ordered another low-profile cooler to replace this one. I hope the back panel doesn't break while waiting for the new cooler to arrive.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
