Works better than a few days ago

I was delighted with these pens when I received and tested them on December 5th, 2020. At that time they produced a fairly wide range of shades of gray as shown in the image. I then removed them and planned to use them in October 2021. So on September 22, 2021, 9.5 months later, I took them out and was shocked to find that they all ran out! But I tested them again a few days later (September 26th) and they worked pretty much like new. I can't explain what happened. I kept them upright for many months, probably tips DOWN. But for the past few days they have been stored tips UP,
