I'm an architect specializing in construction and this thing is smart...rather than focusing on strengthening the tailgate and/or hinges these smart people focused on making the tire/wheel assembly as close to the vehicle as possible, reducing the axial force acting on the bolts and tailgate housing... To top it all off, I fitted a heavy duty doorstop between my bumper and my tire which the effectively transfers most of the load entirely to the bumper. This eliminates the need for additional reinforcements.
