If I couldn't give this one any stars I would. This item has been used with a car backpack and the backpack has not been overloaded. The clips are soft metal and one is fully bent, causing one side of the pack to detach. The strap that runs in the hatch and around the bag was the only thing holding the bag on that side and thankfully it did. The one that didn't bend fully was partially bent and was very difficult to close use. I wish I never got it. In the end, on the road and in trouble, I used a dollar store dog leash and it worked much better. I tied a knot on the line leaving a large loop that I threaded through the top of the hatch. Then I threaded the backpack straps through the loops to attach the carrier instead of those useless clips. It worked!
