Update: The seller contacted me and assured me the stains are not mold or fungi and that these plates have been sanitized at temperatures above 150-180 degrees Celsius . They also sent me what QC is looking for, which would be considered acceptable/unacceptable. I feel more confident using them and have since settled on the more pinpoint ones for personal use. I've also washed them with soap and water although they curled up a bit when drying - I plan to use them anyway as I never want to throw anything good away for environmental reasons. All I know is that my party guests will be a bit picky and likely stay away from the more squeamish or make comments, so I'll leave them at home. I know I'm under no obligation to update my review now that the company has contacted me, but I wanted to provide that update and be as honest as possible. They certainly put my mind at ease and made every effort to allay my concerns. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - These panels are very strong and durable and of course environmentally friendly which is the most important aspect. However, I was very disappointed because I could only use half (13 cymbals) of the set. I understand that bamboo panels don't look white and "clean" and may have patterns on them, but most of them with brown and wood patterns looked almost moldy. Maybe not, but I think some would be wary of using them. I'm not sure if I should wash them with dish soap and air dry and then inform my guests that the plates are sanitized and clean, but that just creates more problems and defeats the purpose of getting disposable plates. I don't want to waste and throw away the plates so I need to find a use for them somehow. If you don't mind the dark and mottled appearance of some of these bamboo plates then this is a great set - very durable. At $18.99 and I can only save 13-14 cymbals makes this set very expensive for me and overall not worth it.
