Identical in size/shape and material to the OEM Fluval pads, but with a better feel (heavier thread maybe?). It fits snugly so there is no water bypass. They are durable enough to be rinsed out with tank water or filter water after a water change as it can be reused multiple times. However, they are so inexpensive that they can be easily replaced as each filter medium loses its effectiveness over time. I recommend using 2 pads. When replacing, I throw out the top one (the dirtiest of the two), slide the bottom one up, and put a new washed pad underneath it (on the filtration system from top to bottom) every 3-4 weeks. Always rinse filter material before use - tap water is suitable for new media. - Never wash an old gasket you intend to reuse with tap water, rinse with tank water in a clean container to prevent the tap water from killing the beneficial bacteria otherwise you could get ammonia/nitrite/nitrate spikes that could harm you Pisces.
