Review on Synology Bay DiskStation DS220 Diskless by Mateusz Mazurkiewicz ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best purchase in my life, I will definitely buy it again.

Here are other features that I use, but that did not fit into the dignity: - git server - the ability to mount remote FTP, NFS servers and provide access to them to users - a simple replacement for spreadsheets and a text editor - an index is built on the files and it is possible to find duplicates and bang them - and of course there are all sorts of tools for analyzing where the place goes - it is possible to deliver a bunch of software from the official repository (different web servers and databases), and you can also use community repositories - there is still an opportunity to connect video surveillance (I want everything, but I’m not going to buy a camera, and it’s not clear how much this will affect performance in other tasks) - probably something else that I poked, but I have not come in handy yet . Do not look at the characteristics of this device the way you do when buying a PC. They are really modest, but there is a tuned Linux inside, and this thing does an excellent job with all the regular functions, the power for home hamster tasks is beyond the eyes. You pay money not for a piece of hardware, but for a solution, for its functionality and ease of setup and use, and it seems to be the best on the market for devices of this class. I've been using it for a year and a half now. Together with two disks (I specially took 2 pieces of 4TB for NAS) it cost 52 thousand. At that moment, of course, I shed a tear, but now, after so much time, I don’t regret a bit and continue to use it for more and more new tasks. Now I have no idea how I lived without it before. Now I want DS920+, which costs space money today with disks T_T Best of all, the potential of the device will be appreciated by IT people, of course, but if you are a paranoid who does not trust cloud services, but is quite capable of reconciling with a vendor's solution, this is what you need.

Pros
  • Incredible number of functions with a fairly simple setup. Here's what I use it for: - storage of documents, home photos, videos, etc. - file sharing synchronization point in the house for many devices, phones, tablet, home PC, two laptops, and of course everything works on all common operating systems (Win, Mac, Linux). - of course, a backup, can sync with a Google disk, with a disk (bad, but this is due to restrictions on the side, the device has nothing to do with it) - of course, there is the ability to backup from the NAS itself to S3-compatible storage, incrementally, with a convenient search and display on the date you need to restore. If desired, the S3 directory can be mounted locally on the PC and pull out the data, even if the NAS dies - you can just backup to HDD connected via usb - to the directory backup mode on the PC there is a directory synchronization mode, a la dropbox, you just need to install the utility - print server (no need to connect an old laser printer to the laptop anymore, just print over the network), no more need to keep the desktop turned on to print over the network, no need to turn on the computer anymore to print something, because you can print from your phone (wife delighted) - torrento rocking chair - video watcher - they started watching movies on TV from it, but everyone decided that it was time to sleep, you open the same movie on the tablet and watch further without disturbing anyone - if there is an archive of your favorite music, you can listen to it through the DS Audio application on your phone, but if it clings to the phone with a car via bluetooth, then you can listen to music on a trip to work from the same storage, now you won’t surprise anyone, but it’s mega convenient - If you add memory up to 6Gb, you can run virtual machines for experiments. - And you can raise software in docker containers, for example, I use drawio to run on the internal network. - You can fumble files outside - Synology Notes is quite suitable for replacing Evernote, there is a version for PC and phone - and a whole lot more.
Cons
  • It’s very expensive to take it now, of course, especially considering that the piece of iron costs even without normal disks, and with disks the cost becomes completely sky-high . But here you need to understand that the is constantly falling, and there is a shortage of chips in the world, and in general a pandemic
