I bought these to replace my regular shorts which no longer fit. I am 51 years old, 5ft 7ft 185lbs; I bought a large (waist 32-34 inches). I'm primarily a mountain biker and ride cross country/trail 3-4 days a week. I usually wear Specialized or Pearl Izumi. I'd say they're on par with the Specialized Atlas shorts, but I like these liners more. Advantages: 1) High quality materials. The shorts are good zippers, well placed. Velcro waist adjusters are very durable and easily accessible. The suede balaclava is heavily embossed but not bulky.2) Fit. The shorts are large and sit just above the knee. While this suggests a relaxed fit, they aren't very roomy. Liners are comfortable. no nappy feeling 3) Shorts are an afterthought (which is good). I never thought about the shorts sagging or riding up the leg. 4) Pockets are well placed. The leg pockets felt well placed and easily accessible. I go with 5 ounces. a bottle with a hammer in the left pocket and fits well when pedaling and is easy to reach with gloves. 5) Wash well - I wash in cold water with a microfiber detergent and let it air dry. After numerous washes, the shorts appear unironed6) Zipper - At first I wasn't a fan of the zipper. I thought they would make noise and draw attention to themselves, no, as they are now; if not, they are easy to remove. Cons: 1) Suede - because it's thicker (not bulky) it dries longer than thinner pads 2) Belt loops - two useless belt loops were added to the front. I wanted belt loops in case my waist gets even smaller, but honestly I don't use them; but if you put two in the front, you can also put two more in the back. 3) There is no attachment of the liner to the shell. One feature of the higher end MTB shorts that I love is that the liner snaps onto the shell. While this doesn't seem to be a factor with them, it would be nice. At this price point ($35.00) I think these shorts are hard to beat. Only time will tell how well they wear, but I only get about 6 months with my Specialized pads, a year on the shell and they cost 3 times as much. Size can be an issue for tall people. At 5ft 7in I wear a size 30 inseam; They can be a bit short for taller men. Please check the size chart before ordering. Your large size is US average, so you may need to order one size up from what you usually wear. !
