I don't check the pH of my aquarium water as often as I should, although I know it's important - I once had an entire aquarium of juvenile fish due to the treated tap water I added lost was too acidic and it killed my fish. This test kit is easier to use than the ones I've bought in the past, so I'll be testing more often from now on. It comes with a dropper, a small vial with a cap, and a blue reagent solution. You use a dropper to remove water from the aquarium and fill the tube up to the 5mL line, then add 4 drops of the blue solution to the tube and watch the water change color. Then match the color of the water to the chart to find the pH of the water. This is a wide range kit, meaning it only measures in half increments (0.5) from 5.0 to 9.5 for freshwater and 4.5 to 9.0 for saltwater. But that's enough to tell you if your aquarium water is dangerously acidic or alkaline (7.0 is neutral). The kit provides general information about pH but will not tell you the best pH for your aquarium. This depends on the type of fish in the aquarium and whether it is freshwater or saltwater. For example, other sources say that the best pH for goldfish is 7.5, which is slightly alkaline. This kit is for testing purposes only and does not contain any pH raising or lowering chemicals. They must be purchased separately. The box says it contains enough consumables for 100 tests. The box also has an expiration date (mine says 11/2024) but it says the contents should be used within a year of opening for best results. contains symbols with a number of safety instructions. However, very small print indicates that the outer packaging is multi-purpose packaging and only the safety instructions INSIDE the packaging apply to this product. So most of these warnings on the packaging do not apply. The only warning that actually appears inside and applies to this product is that it is highly flammable and since you are only dealing with a small amount of liquid blue reagent and adding it to water I don't find it that worrisome. Of course, there are also warnings that the product should be kept out of the reach of children and that it can stain. I found it easy to match the colored water in the test tube to the colors on the chart. Mine came out slightly acidic, so I plan on slowly increasing the pH over the course of a few days. This will make my fish much healthier.
