UPDATE: the quality of the latter has deteriorated A LOT! I've failed two of these after 3 days of use. After the first day of moderate use, the tape didn't fully retract the last few feet. On the third day, the well erupted at the 30 foot mark. I thought it might just be a lemon, but I ordered a second cassette and the same thing happened. Will not order again Old review: surveyor who has tried many tapes. For the price it's the best value and I've only been using these tapes for a few years. There's a bit of slop at the end, so if you're using this for precision I don't recommend it. But if accuracy isn't that important to your application, they work great. The tape itself is a little flimsy and will usually break if you're a little harsh on it. The reason I usually have to buy new tape is because it eventually tears and breaks at the 3 or 4 foot mark. That being said, for my application I save money on tape measures over the course of a year by using these tape measures versus more expensive brands. Because even more expensive brands fail over time. I mostly use them outdoors and they tend to get wet and the springs in them are the same as any other band. Wetness causes the springs to fail over time, so over the course of a year I typically order the same amount of expensive bands as if I had just used them.
