I've had all sorts of problems with the water in my aquarium. Transition from cloudy water to bacterial bloom. Weekly water changes didn't help due to the use of water treatment chemicals. So while researching I came across this one. I have a rear filter hanging and wasn't sure if it would work. So I cut out a piece the size of my regular filter and put it right behind it with the rough side touching the filter cartridge. There were no problems with water. After about 2 days the water became clear. A few days later, about a week after I placed the polishing pad, I saw that my water was not passing through the filter as easily. So I removed the cartridge and the polishing pad when I changed the water every week. The filter cartridge was fine, but the polishing pad was completely covered in this black goo. Instead of rinsing, I replaced the polishing pad entirely. The same after 1 week. I have to change my polishing pad weekly because of all the black, slimy dirt that builds up on it. My aquarium stays clean even after all that black stuff on the polishing pad. I'm happy to see it's working, although I have to change it weekly.
