Lately I've been working with some air-drying clay because I don't have a kiln at home, unfortunately this clay was definitely not suitable for modeling. Now I have 5 pounds of clay that I can't use. I only sculpt faces/masks and other figures and it was impossible to get this clay to do fine detail. I suppose using a wheel or gable molding would work great! . I'm not the best potter so they look like a 5th grade art project but it was fun. I painted them and then glazed them to make them last longer. I'd say about a quarter of an inch was the minimum width I was willing to make sure there weren't any cracks, and since the clay is so grainy I didn't add detail to the clay work.
