You will need to assemble, which takes a hot-minute to figure out how to do it, but overall not difficult. I got these for my 3 year old nephew for Christmas. Because I bought them, I had to be the one to assemble them. Because I didn't want to send my brother and sister-in-law past the limit of their medications, I didn't put the batteries in and didn't tell my nephew they can make noise. Happy nephew = happy auntie!
