Tried 3 different ones, this is my favorite

My kids and I are learning to use these. I have three different ones - partly for comparison, partly because we just needed more than one so we could all create something together. Two turned out to be identical (with a small handle, but without a backlight). Both were in the $33-$36 range. This one is $10 cheaper and, dare I say, slightly better for four main reasons: 1 - It doesn't look cheap - others have a slightly wobbly temperature controller and one of the coasters broke before we even used it. once. It seems heavier, but not harder. 2 - Others do not maintain a constant temperature. If I draw the line slowly, at the same speed along the grain, it gets thinner as I move because the tip cools relative to the wood. This makes the lines more consistent and we don't burn ourselves as easily while drawing a line. If you go with the grain, it goes away like butter. It takes a lot more patience and practice to swim against the tide.3 - The shape of this grip is designed to hug the stand so it's not as easy to slip off. They're perfect for changing tips mid-job! Other kits don't come with anything, so if you want to change the tip you'll either have to wait for it to cool, grab the pliers yourself, or try to work gently with the gloves on (but the gloves will melt). .One more note. The red "indicator" doesn't really do much. When it's on, it turns red. But it doesn't flash or turn green when the temperature is ready. There's nothing in the instructions that tells me this will happen, but also nothing that it should do. It's pretty easy to tell when the pen is done though, you can smell it and feel the heat emitted. The red light is handy for reminding you that it's plugged in and powered on. All in all, this is a fun educational toy. My kids (9 and 11 years old) enjoy being with me and my 7 year old even joins us occasionally but it's really too hard for him to keep straight. We all learn together and have fun.
