Good bang for the buck in Testers

UPDATE: Two days after receiving the meter, the LCD backlight (controlled by a photocell) began to flicker. There is no way to turn it off. Very annoying. It's a Chinese counter for $40 so I wasn't expecting much. Send it back. The meter is fine for the money for ballpark data collection and electrical testing. I use it to record the cycle times of the heating elements so I'm not worried about accurate readings. Let's be honest. This is an inexpensive Chinese gauge. The software/USB setup was a bit tricky and a typical English translation error. The instructions are printed in 2pt so you will need a magnifying glass to read them. The software on the mini-CD is bare, so you will need a CD drive. Which laptop has a floppy disk drive? I had to copy it to a USB stick to boot into my laptop. In the internet age, it would be nice to have a website for easy software download. I had to go into the laptop device manager and set the serial communications port to 2400 baud, reboot the laptop for the changes to take effect. . seems to be working as advertised and the data logs are fine. Nothing special and software can be configured, except for the sample rate. You can change the sample rate from 240 per minute (2 times per second) to one minute. The USB port is hidden under a cover on the top of the meter and removing the cover requires a very small Phillips screwdriver to remove two very small screws. Poor construction and the certainty that the screws will be lost. The temperature sensor has a height of about +6 degrees compared to a calibrated digital temperature sensor. In addition, it is only displayed in degrees Celsius. There is no way to change it to Fahrenheit. Truth? The voltage and resistance measurements appear to be fairly accurate. As I said, this is a very inexpensive meter, so don't expect it to have the accuracy and performance of a $500 Fluke DVM.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Concise instructions
