The on-board stabilizer is a switch (MPM3610 is a synchronous rectification module, a step-down converter with built-in power MOSFETs and a choke). Accepts an input voltage of up to 21 volts and delivers 5 volts up to amps according to its specification. If you want to supply external 5 volts (and not use USB) you can connect this external power supply to the 5 volt pin. When you do this, make sure the Vin pin is hovering. I connected both Vin and the 5 volt pins to an external 5 volt supply and blew the regulator. The MPM datasheet doesn't mention this type of connection - it may not be allowed. Given the MPM's tiny size, an output current of 1 amp might be excessive, but 200mA seems perfectly acceptable. The nice thing is that it's much more efficient than a linear regulator.
