Update - March 7, 2022Now that I have had some time to work a bit more with this tool I have decided to update this review since it has proven to be a little more beneficial than I had thought. My original review is still accurate, but I find that the rings, while not real tight, are strong enough to hold pretty well and should stand the test of time as I had hoped. I am still using some wire ties to help keep the fencing in place while I apply some rings, but much less than before. It just took a while to get a system down for using the tool. That said I am changing my two star rating to a four star.Original ReviewI have about 300 feet of 12 gauge farm fencing around my back lot that was installed some 30+ years ago. It has larger holes nearer the top that are large enough for my small beagle to squeeze her body through. To keep her from escaping I am adding some 14 gauge welded wire fence in front which has smaller openings.I purchased this tool to join the two pieces of fencing together in random areas over the entire length of the fence. I started the project using some good outdoor UV protected wire ties which work well, but I know over time will dry and break. I searched and found this tool and rings which seemed like the perfect solution. The tool itself is not flimsy or lightweight, but it is not made from the highest quality materials either. I don't see it lasting very long. However, I purchased it for this one job and it came with a lot of rings so there is that. The issue I have with the tool is it does not draw the fencing tight together as I had imagined it would. It's not that the fence wire is too small or the rings are too large for it to draw tight - it just does not apply enough pressure. It looks like the angle the tool needs to be on to install a ring, which is about 45 degrees, prevents it from drawing tight. The design of the tool would have been better if the head was angled more so the rings were installed perpendicular to the fence wire versus the 45 degree angle that is needed. In the end I plan to still install rings since they are made from metal and will outlast the wire ties. I can go back over each ring with a pair of pliers to squeeze it tight, but that is certainly not an ideal process. Regardless I will be doing that after the fence is installed using the wire ties which allow me to pull the fencing tight together. Using these pliers while building the fence would be a very awkward and frustrating process. There is still some value to the tool but had I known what the result would have been I definitely would not have purchased this tool. I would not recommend it unless you are okay with rings that are not tight or don't mind following up with a pair of pliers to draw each one closed. I am very disappointed.
