GOES 16 1/24/21 on computer components

This kit works like a charm. There is a downside, but I'll cover that in a moment. Installing the antenna is quite easy. The LMR 400 coaxial cable is large and heavy, but that's not a problem. It just takes patience to get things right. Basic firmware is required to make it work after the antenna is aligned. Additional staining programs are also available. The software is available online and easy to find. Here, too, the antenna alignment program on the Internet is very helpful when aligning the antenna. The weak point for me was the fastening material for the antenna. It's a 90-degree mount, so it doesn't matter much for precise height adjustment. It has little to no lean adjustment when in an area that requires leaning. My range for GOES 16 called for -25 degrees. You can't get it from a right angle bracket. I found a satellite TV mount with a swivel head that allowed me to achieve a -25 degree tilt. It also allowed me to fine tune the elevation and azimuth. With the adjustable bracket you can adjust the values and observe until the optimal value is found. The LAN has an LED that points to the Pi and not the antenna. Weatherproofing is a must as there is a USB port at the end of the LAN for power. The port is fortunately not needed, but must be protected from the weather. It remains a mystery to me why the harbor was designed to be open and facing upwards. All in all this is a great package that works and is very satisfying when that first package is decoded and written to become an image.

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • Basically ok but...
