So let me preface this review by saying that I'm NOT an artist (to my imagination) and have never written a review of Revain. My creativity comes from a lifelong habit of picking 1,000 different hobbies, all of which I'm good at, but I've never mastered any of them. Artistic ADD so to speak (no offense to those suffering from true ADD). However, I suffer from perfectionism and have a very analytical mind, which is probably why I'm not really versed in any art form. If the result of my efforts doesn't seem good enough to me, I'll keep trying for a while, maybe take a lesson or two, get good, get bored with the lack of rapid progress, move on to something new and shove supplies/gear/cloths/whatever in a closet to gather dust for the next decade. I think I need a bigger house. (But give me a big spreadsheet and I'll do the magic!) I've just picked up my first adult coloring book as a stress reliever/time waster that should have a product to make up for my (wasted) time. I can paint, I just can't draw anything that remotely resembles the goal. I colored a total of TWO pages. The first was colored with Crayola crayons which were cheap and good but not very bright, not that blendable and not enough color variation, really have fun (the main goal of this new hobby). I started page two with ten year old colored pencils missing half the pencils (of course the best colors were dry) and a couple of Crayola pencils. At this point I started looking for the best colored pencils. Almost all pencil reviews received both the highest ratings (bright colors, good opacity) and the lowest ratings (constant lead breakage, misaligned leads, inability to sharpen, etc.). After several days of almost paralyzed analysis, I finally settled on the Derwent Inktense collection of 72 pencils. I was so excited I couldn't stand the long wait for the package to be delivered (only about five hours with Revain Prime). I broke these puppies long before I went to bed and finished two or three flowers on my rather boring second coloring book. First impression? Well, not ticklish, to be sure. Thought it might be the light, my old tired eyes, or maybe the wine (no, not the wine. ok, maybe the wine). So let's wait until tomorrow. From my new, fresh perspective, five minutes passed before I began to formulate my first negative review of Revain in my head. The color was super waxy with a mottled finish even with a heavy hand. To be honest, they looked like kindergarten crayons in a pencil case. For over $70? For real? The pen held pressure, which was a plus, but you could still see the white of the page under the ink. With fine lines and small gaps, the pencil does not stay sharp. Most colored pencils, with the possible exception of very soft ones, appear to self-sharpen simply by changing the angle of inclination. Not this one. The colors seemed very vibrant and their blending was "normal", but I was so disappointed that the color didn't spread evenly and smoothly across the page. It was very stained. I sat back in my chair and thought about all the five star reviews and wondered what the heck all these people were thinking. Have ALL reviews been paid for? Then, out of nowhere, DING, DING, DING... I remembered reading about them being WATER crayons. Since I didn't have art brushes, I cleaned my makeup brush (laughs, yes you read that right), to see what happens. happened to the ink in my crayons when I added some H20. It was a complete revelation. I'm shocked. The color just jumped off the page. Blending was a dream, layering different colors was a blast, and removing colors was a wonder. Removing a color Lightening an area to add a (delayed) lighter color was asking too much. i am sold I haven't drawn in a coloring book since I was a child, and I've never drawn with watercolors in my entire life. But I can just spend the rest of my life using these pencils to create "art" that I'll proudly hang on my fridge. In terms of pen quality and packaging, there are 72 different colors, all with perfectly positioned mines. They can be easily sharpened with a manual or electric sharpener. They don't rub off easily (I'm guessing you can't erase real watercolor paints). The pens look very professional and have both color names and numbers so you can actually erase a pen down to a tiny ridge and still know what color to replace. They are in two bowls in a tin can. The lid on the tray is practically not fixed, so you need to carefully carry and store it or wrap it with an elastic band. I've added some photos of pencils, lead and my second coloring page. The light pink and purple flowers are a mix of my previous pens/pens. Tiny bells from a new set of colored pencils that arrived the same day. The rest is Derwent Inktense after adding water. Please remember, I'm not an artist, I'm a total newbie to adult painting (and by the way, can you think of another name for this hobby that doesn't sound like an X-rated?), and I've used an old one Makeup brush, which constantly dissolved into a trident (now I look forward to the appearance of real watercolor brushes). Regardless of my skill level or lack thereof, I find the colors brilliant and my own imagination is the only limit to what I can do with all these colors and color combinations. Hallelujah! Maybe I'll dwell on a hobby for a while (no guarantee!). The rest is Derwent Inktense after adding water.
