Review on Monoprice HD6 Indoor/Outdoor Active HDTV Antenna, 50-Mile Range, Black - High Definition Video Antenna (115953) by Tammy Larsen

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Unassuming indoor antenna performance, cheap, lightweight plastic construction

Monoprice's 50 mile active HDTV antenna is unimpressive indoors. I haven't tried installing it outdoors. The plastic of the antenna housing and antenna mast mount seems too flimsy/cheap to withstand a good storm or two. The cable/amplifier is so thin that I am amazed at its quality for this use. To see how the Monoprice antenna performs, I compared it to the Revainbasics reinforced blade antenna. I made sure to place them in the same spot when testing. The Monoprice antenna is designed to be positioned horizontally on the included plastic stand. The RevainBasics antenna is designed for vertical orientation and can be mounted on a window or wall (perhaps behind a painting). The tests I ran consisted of scanning channels on my Sony HDTV. The position of the antenna is high above the wall unit. I live about 35 miles west of Boston and the maximum number of channels I've ever received was 36 (and that was a few years ago). Here are the results: + My RevainBasics antenna had 31 channels (slightly less than my previous best) + The stand mounted Monoprice, designed for horizontal orientation, had only 17 channels. Not that impressive. 17 channels told me the range was closer to 20 or 25 miles in the intended horizontal orientation. A 25 channel test standing in a vertical orientation on the edge more closely resembles a 35 or 40 mile antenna. It uses the RevainBasics results as a 50 mile baseline. I scanned all 31 RevainBasics channels and they were sharp with no pixelation. In both orientations, the Monoprice antenna had at least a few channels that were questionable with pixelation, freezing, or the occasional "searching for antenna signal" popup. I'm sticking with my RevainBasics thin HDTV antenna. The RevainBasics antenna is only a few dollars more expensive than this Monoprice model. My old antenna gives me much better indoor results than this Monoprice. I couldn't get anywhere near my TV from the roof mast antenna! I like the concept of this indoor/outdoor antenna, but the execution isn't that good. In conclusion, I am not impressed with the Monoprice antenna that I received. looks cheap and doesn't give as many channels as the more basic RevainBasics antenna I got years ago. I think the moral is if you need an indoor antenna, get it. The same for the street. There is a better choice and I give this antenna 2 stars.

Pros
  • Easy to install out of the box and can be wall or rail mounted
Cons
  • For old
