Review on Wink Smart Home Hub by Steve Wynn

Check other home automation options first

Over the past few years, this device has gotten progressively worse. It worked really well for the first year, and when it started rolling out updates last year it had trouble reconnecting. After the latest updates, it completely disconnects from the network several times a day (blinking purple - read the manual, the meaning of blinking purple is not clear). This is very annoying, especially when you use the schedule to turn on the AC unit at a specific time, then the hub turns off and your AC runs for 4 hours straight until the hub finally turns on again. This is the only wireless device I've had an issue with my Google WiFi router. Some people say you need to move the device away from the router - I've moved it everywhere with the same current issue. Resetting the modem and router only offers a temporary solution. It's annoying. Home automation is supposed to be reliable, and this device is absolutely not. My parents have a SmartThings hub that I will be going to and I suggest that anyone considering using the Wink hub also consider that option.

Pros
  • Wink's first home automation hub, predecessor to Wink Hub 2
Cons
  • Updates available
