When my desktop was off I just plugged it in, turned on the computer and it worked. There is no software to download. The computer picks it up and does what it takes. Prior to purchase, my computer kept dropping the Wi-Fi connection, and when I kept troubleshooting, the error message was a "gateway" issue. Doesn't tell you what to do about it, or that the "adapter" is defective. So if you keep encountering the gateway problem, here is what you need to do: Replace the adapter. I've had to replace these several times in about 5 years so I'm guessing they won't last forever. So far the price has been great and it seems to work well.
