Review on ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Half-Size Tatami Mat - 3' x 3' - Traditional Oriental Furniture by Audrey Talbott

Not real tatami - "veneer " tatami

I have other tatami mats and wasn't immediately impressed when they arrived. There are two types of tatamines which are made from whole plaited straw and others which are made from fiberboard covered with plaited straw. There are two ways to tell the difference without cutting it. First, weight. A real 36" x 36" tatami weighs about 34 pounds. Fiberboard models weigh about 20 pounds. These weigh 20 pounds. Second, the top layer will not slip off the core when walking on a real tatami. It feels like the top "plywood". "The layer of braided straw is not connected to the rest of the inside of the mat. I suspect these mats will peel off fairly quickly if a hard floor is used. We use two of these mats side by side as a king size headboard so it doesn't pose a big problem. I chose tatami for this purpose because our 7 month old baby keeps falling and climbing and hitting the tatami won't hurt his head like a traditional hardwood headboard.
