I bought a medium size for a 4.5 year old who weighed 40-45 pounds. He is in the 100th percentile among children his age. We got the swimming trunks today and they fall off him. So I asked my 6 year old who is over 55lbs to try them on and they fit him better. They are still too big in the legs and very loose. I am very disappointed in the fit as my youngest son really needs some of these things. I will return the large size that hasn't arrived yet. I would downsize if your kids want to use them for real swimmers. This slows the speed and prevents them from moving in the water.
