It's made of durable yet lightweight wood and the inner drawer holds all the pieces. It's important to remember that the overall size of the board itself is approximately the size of a standard 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of carbon paper. So if you look at the pictures they can be deceiving. Checkers are actually smaller than a dime. I knew that beforehand, so the size didn't bother me. The only possible problem I see is that there is nothing holding the lid in place. I figured it would slide down the rail to close, or something like that so there was no risk of all the pieces falling out when stored. Not so. We have it on the bookshelf and it will be opened from time to time. We store all parts in ziplock bags so they don't fall out and make a mess so it's not a big deal but it's a design flaw that only makes it 4 stars.
