Geometry triumphs again! Success with your own hands!

I used this little wonder on a project to link three IKEA Kallax units together to divide a space. The initial search for "how to" was a little daunting. After more research and concern, I glued and screwed the ends of adjacent blocks together. For maximum strength and stability, I chose to use glued dowels to join the edges of the three "tops" together. I have little woodworking skills or special tools and found it difficult to align the dowel holes in 3D. A little research revealed the existence of something called a dowel jig, and then Revain found this inexpensive kit. I checked out some well done video reviews on YouTube. It was as if the hosts were a little skeptical that something so cheap could perform this rather complicated procedure. Well, it worked for her - and it worked for me. A bonus for me was the completeness of the kit - bits, dowels (enough for this small project which I used 3 in each of the two joints) and thick dowels. enough to fit the 1 1/2" edges I connected. Won Won Won. Some points: Several reviews mentioned problems with holding the tool while drilling. I had no problem with that - of course I have the tree pinched while working on this. I can see it would be difficult to get everything right by hand fixing both the wood and the tool. Don't do this. Another review talked about checking alignment for drilling of a second set of holes.. I don't know what you're talking about - after you've drilled the first few holes, the instructions tell you to put pins in and then use those pins with a drill guide, a "fence" guide, and then a pin .alignment slots so that the second set of holes are in the right place.this worked great for me.and I worked with the proverbial "Ikea wood" which wasn't shabby who is, so all I could do was – what? Centimeter? -- MDF holding the dowel in place so I can wiggle it if I want. Because I didn't want that, I kept the tool flat on the edges by using either the drill guide or the alignment slot when placing the second hole. want the top to be flat and that's a must. The instructions for the kit are good, but I highly recommend watching a YouTube video demo or two. After looking at a few and understanding the geometry, I didn't even bother trying trims (of course I was working on invisible edges, and I could always choose to just not bother since those top boards are in place and held in place serious screws) To be honest, after seeing how clever it was, I just HAD to try it! It worked great. I am writing to support those who, like me, have limited skills, experience and tools! Much luck!
