Although we have a rug I didn't find it thick enough when our baby was learning to sit up so I got it for extra padding and that was wonderful. This is a special play area for our 6 month old and a safe place to leave some of his toys and our 3 year old knows this is a baby's space and needs to be careful when around. The rug itself is the perfect thickness making it soft and best of all it is machine washable. I've had to wash it several times after baby burped on it and it's holding up great, not to mention there's a design on both sides so you can change the design so baby can see something different.
