A cheap solution to a potentially costly problem

Summers are short in the great white north, and every year it seemed like i finished right after the winter took the boat off and put it away, we got sunshine the last week. When you only have a few months of boating season, a week or so makes a big difference. A few years ago, just after a nice sunny week, we pulled the boat out of the garage and got it ready, only to have frost/snow hit at the end of May and we had to invent all sorts of MacGyver stuff to keep the unit going set it on low with an ACU_RITE 00986 wireless digital fridge/freezer thermometer and a small (200w) quartz heater and it has worked PERFECTLY this year keeping the unit at a more or less constant 36-38 at outside temperatures. well below 0. I made sure it worked by plugging in the wires and putting the unit in the freezer before trusting it with my motor and noting that it would turn on at 35 and turn off again at 45. I ran a heavy extension into the engine bay, placed it level with the oil pan, then hooked up a heater to it and installed the heater on a melamine board about level with the water pump. Absolutely no chance for a block to hang and far less wasted energy than a timer could cause. I can monitor the temperature from inside, with a history of high and low temperatures, and it has been VERY reliable for the month or so that it has been in use. If there was a problem with the heater thermostat, it would shut off the power if the temperature got too high as well, so it's fail-safe on the high-temp side too. The negative review may be related to quality control issues, but all I can say for sure is that the device I received works great, is priced right, and does exactly what I need. This gave me a few ideas for many more winter repellents and I will be buying more.

Pros
  • Reduces the risk of pipe freezing while saving energy and eliminating the need to disconnect wires every spring
Cons
  • Not sure
